North Bridge Road is one of the oldest roads in Singapore and was outlined in Raffles Town Plan in 1822 and was constructed by GD Coleman between 1833 and 1835. It runs through Kallang, Rochor and downtown centre of Singapore.
"Madrasah" is an arabic word for School. Madrasah Alsagoff is the oldest surviving madrasah in Singapore. It was founded in 1912 by Syed Mohamed Bin Ahmed Alsagoff. It was first started at his family house which was at Java Road (Presently at Crawford Estate).
It's initial aim was to teach Muslim boys the tenets of Islam. To ensure the school's continuity, he left a sum of money and endowment for the school in his will. His nephews donated more funds to the endowment and established the madrasah at Jalan Sultan. They taught Arabic, Islam and English to approximately 200 students.
The madrasah started admitting girls in 1940s. And over the next 2 decades, the number of boys enrolled to the madrasah decreased. Hence, the trustees decided to convert it into an institution for girls in mid-1960s.
Sultan Hussein built a place for himself soon after the founding of Singapore. He brought his whole family and hundreds of followers from Rhio. His son Sultan Ali built Sultan's Gate between 1840 and 1843.Busy forging ironwork around Sultan Gate.
Apart from metals, anumber of foundries worked with brass to produce razor sharp parangs (long blades), ship paraphernalia such as anchors and hooks and kitchen utensils for everyday use. Commonly referred to in Hokkien as Phah Thi Koi, Sultan Gate housed a handful of Chinese blacksmiths,mostly dominated by Hakkas until the mid-2000s. The thud crashing hammers against the red-hot anvils and clangs of pails and zinc sheets were familiar sounds along the streets of Sultan Gate. The trade was passed on from artisan to apprentice or from father to son.
The former Chong Cheng School and Chong Pun Girls' school was founded by the Hokkien community, which indicate their prominence in the Kampung Glam area.
According to records, majority of the students resided within the Kampung Glam vicinity. It was first located at Telok Ayer Street at Thian Hock Keng Temple and then later moved to Aliwal Street in 1917.
Gedung Kuning or also known as the Yellow Mansion was once home to family of Haji Yusoff "Tali Pinggang' or Haji Yusoff the Belt Merchant.
Haji Yusoff, patriarch of Gedung Kuning was a respected merchant who toiled at his business and was recognised as one of the great pioneers in the Malay community. Gedung Kuning has witnessed the seasons of Haji Yusoff's family through four generations. It's gate welcomed the poor who came to ask for alms.
Gedung Kuning stood proud befitting its royal colour and stature even after the family moved out.
"Masjid" (a Malay word for Mosque) Sultan, is the most prominent landmark in Kampung Glam as it is an important focal point for Muslims in Singapore. This building was constructed in the early 1920s.
In 1823, the Sultan wanted a Mosque near his residence in Kampung Glam and Raffles allocated funds from the British East India Company towards it's construction. It was initially an simple structure with a three-tier tiled roof, the mosque was constructed between 1824 and 1826. In 1879, the grandson of Sultan Hussein, Sultan Alauddin Alam Shah, also known as Tunku Alam, and a Tunku Aleema gave more land to the mosque.
By the early 1900s, it was decided that the mosque would be demolished and rebuilt. The mosque was designed in the Indo-Saracenic style, with domes, minarets, and balustrades. The building’s most striking features are the 2 large golden-yellow domes.
"Tembaga" means "Copper" in Malay. The Chinese used to call this stretch of Bussorah Street "Pak Tang Koi" or Coppersmith Street. The name of Kampung Tembaga derived its name from the Javanese Coppersmiths who were once active there in crafting and repairing utensils. Due to post-war, the trade gradually declined as cheaper utensils were introduced.
Kandahar Street is located at the heart of Kampung Glam conservation area, which as originally part of Javanese and Malay district which gradually shrank after redevelopment projects in the 1960s. Some of these redevelopments are the Precinct North 1 and the Golden Mile Building.
Despite their names, Kandahar Street, and the neighbouring Baghdad Street and Muscat Street, have little immediate “Arab” origins. Their names are believed to reflect the popularity of Perso-Arabic romances depicted in the predominantly Javanese performed Malay "Bangsawan" theatre. Although the architecture of the adjacent Masjid Sultan is decidedly Indo-Saracenic, it was actually designed by an Irish architect as a replacement for a century-old, South-East Asian, tiered-roof structure which had fallen into disrepair.
Kampung Kaji or also known as "Pilgrim Village". A Javanese pronunciation of "Haji" (Pilgrim) as there were many Javanese who were living here. Up till the mid-1970s, Singapore was the pilgrim hub in Southeast Asia. Muslims from Malaysia, Thailand and particularly Indonesia, who were making the "haj" (pilgrimage) would travel to Singapore and board the "kapal haj" (Pilgrim Ship) and go on a journey to Jeddah which could take weeks.
Bussorah Street, known for the "sheikh hajis" (Pious Men) in the community for their knowledge of the "haj". This street is where most of the pilgrims and their accompanying families would stay while waiting for the ship. There were an array of services available for them to prepare for their pilgrimage. Some of the services and supplies were food, cheap lodging, money-changers, blankets, shawls and the most popular item; "tali pinggang" (money belts) which pilgrims use when going on "haj".
Although the mode of transportation have changed from water to air in 1975, the former residents continue to call this part of Bussorah Street "Kampung Kaji" till today.
The population who resides at Kampung Bali were Javanese from Bali; Lombok and Sumbawa. Kampung Bali was also where one of the first "Bangsawan" or also known as Malay Opera troupes was formed in Singapore.
The former kampung Bali is the current Bali Lane and the neighbouring lane which ran parallel to it; in present-day the Ophir Road.

In the 60s and 70s, the area provided lodging for poor Malay families, and also gave shelter to pilgrims on their annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Incidentally, that’s where the name of the street has its roots — ‘Haji’ is the Malay word for a Muslim man who’s completed a pilgrimage to Mecca.
Presently, Haji Lane is Singapore’s hip and trendy street. This long, narrow road is lined with fusion restaurants, eclectic shops, and unique concept boutiques.

Mostly owned by Indian businessman, basketry shops were essential for hawkers who peddled goods along pavements or 5 foot ways. Basketry can be found in 3 to 4 shops along Arab Street. Bamboo ware was used for storing dried goods and condiments.
